Equality is our color. The beauty of Vermont lies not only in its natural resources, but also in its people and its laws. Vermont’s progressive attitudes towards equal rights for all people started when it became the first state to abolish slavery. In the year 2000, it became the first state to provide civil unions, legally recognizing committed same-sex couples. In 2009, it became the first state to pass a gay marriage law by legislation rather than court order.
